Nature Hike up Yellow Mtn…

September 8, 2009

Sunday afternoon, we decided to take a drive and do a little nature hike up Yellow Mtn.   We took off with all the kids dressed in summer clothes, but this Mama knew that when we got up the mountain that it would be quite a bit cooler.  So I stashed some jeans and long sleeves in the truck “just in case”.  And sure enough, the girls were changing clothes before we ever started the hike.  Thank goodness I thought ahead!  Prego brain has been failing me quite substantially as of late, but thankfully not this day.  I made sure to bring along my camera, fully charged, and we set out.  I had hoped to find some milkweed to see if the Monarchs had laid their eggs yet, but no such luck.  However, boy o’ boy, did we find a lot to interest us!  I combined most of the photos into flickr mosaics for quicker load time…however, feel free to click on over to the flickr set to see the whole lot of them.

We found several things to add to our nature table…7 empty snail shells, acorns, fascinating rocks and that red seed pod you’ll see in the mosaic below.  There was also this tree stump that caught my eye…do you see what I see?

Let’s go a little closer….he’s a little grumpy don’t you think?

We had such a great time and the weather was perfect.  We ended the hike by going to a local waterfall and standing under it.  It was so nice seeing the leaves starting to change colors on a few of the trees.  Truly gorgeous!!
